Scenario
You’re an athletic trainer employed by a sports medicine clinic that is providing medical coverage for a 10 k fun-walk/run being held in late March in northern Michigan. The day of the race is cloudy, 48 degrees, windy with light rain. About 30 minutes into the run you receive a call on the emergency radio that a participant (walker) has stopped along the course and is need of medical attention. When you arrive you find the participant (older adult male) to be shivering severely, displaying poor motor control, slurred speech and mental confusion. Based on this history and findings, what would you conclude? What would you recommend?
