Chapter 2: Organizations That Help Shape Community Health

In the United States, the primary national health agency is the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Department includes more than 300 programs, covering a wide spectrum of activities. The Department's programs are administered by 11 HHS operating divisions. In addition, the HHS has 10 regional offices that serve as representatives of HHS in direct, official dealings with the state and local governmental organizations.
Visit the Department of Health and Human Services web site. Under the "HHS Family of Agencies" select one of the agencies listed and do some additional reading about the agency. Write a one-page report about the agency including information about its mission and what types of programs it offers.

The most widely recognized international governmental health organization is the World Health Organization. The objective of WHO is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. In support of its main objective, the Organization has a wide range of functions, including the following: To act as the directing and coordinating authority on international health work; to promote technical cooperation; to assist Governments, upon request, in strengthening health services; and to furnish appropriate technical assistance and, in emergencies, necessary aid, upon the request or acceptance of Governments.
Visit the World Health Organization web site. Select "Media Centre" under the "General WHO information" section. From the current news articles provided, select one and write a two-paragraph summary of the article.

All 50 states and U.S. territories have their own state health departments. The state health department provides an essential link between federal and local health agencies. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) is organized as a non-profit association that represents the public health agencies of each of the U.S. states and territories. ASTHO is engaged in a wide range of legislative, scientific, educational, and programmatic issues and activities on behalf of public health.
Visit the ASTHO web site. Click on "State Links." From the map of the United States presented, select your state/territory and click. Peruse your state/territory health agency's web site. Write a brief synopsis of some of the information you were able to find at the site. Include information related to how the agency is organized.
