Chapter 8: Adolescents, Young Adults, and Adults

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) has proven to be a valuable tool for providing vital information about the behaviors affecting the healthy development and academic attainment of our nation's youth.
Visit the YRBSS web site. Select "National Trends in Risk Behaviors." Write a summary of the behaviors that have improved over the past decade and the ones that have not improved. Provide reasons why you think the trends are improving or not improving according to the data provided.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) provides the most up-to-date national vital statistics available. Vital statistics are statistical summaries of vital records; records of major life events. One such event is death. Death rates are calculated by race and age, and in some issues, by cause. It is important that you become knowledgeable about the specific health problems of each age group and race.
Visit the NCHS web site. Select "Death" from the "Data Topics." At the bottom of the list of the 10 Leading Causes of Death there is a source cited. Click on the "Source" then read the report. While examining the causes of death for adults compare the death rates based on sex. Write a summary comparing any differences or similarities you found. Explain in your own words why differences may exist.

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System is the world's largest, on-going telephone health survey system, tracking health conditions and risk behaviors in the United States yearly since 1984. Conducted by the all state health departments as well as those in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands with support from the CDC, BRFSS provides state-specific information about many health behaviors.
Visit the BRFSS web site. Click on the "State Prevalence Data." Find the state or territory you live in and then write a two-page summary about the health status of your state.
