The Health Effects Institute (HEI) is an independent, nonprofit corporation chartered in 1980 to provide high-quality, impartial, and relevant science on the health effects of pollutants from motor vehicles and from other sources in the environment.

The Health Effects Institute
The Office for Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) is located within the Environmental Protection Agency and provides Agency-wide policy, guidance and direction for the Agency's solid waste and emergency response programs. The Office develops guidelines and standards for the land disposal of hazardous wastes and for underground storage tanks.
