Chapter 3: Epidemiology: The Study of Disease, Injury, and Death in the Community

The major office for maintaining disease surveillance data is the Epidemiology Program Office (EPO) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The mission of EPO is to strengthen the public health system by coordinating public health surveillance at CDC and providing domestic and international support through scientific communications, statistical and epidemiologic consultation, and training of experts in surveillance, epidemiology, applied public health, and prevention effectiveness.
Visit the EPO web site. Click on "Public Health Surveillance" and then click on "NETSS." In your own words write a 300 word abstract of the how the NETSS system works and why it is important.
Epidemiology Program Office
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention summarizes state and territorial data and uses it to plan epidemiologic research, conduct investigations, and issue reports. One series of reports, published weekly by the CDC, is called the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).
Visit the MMWR web site. Click on "Weekly Report" and then "Current Volume." Select a topic of interest to you. Write a brief, half-page summary of the article.
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides the most up-to-date national vital statistics available. Vital statistics are statistical summaries of vital records of major life events.
Visit the NCHS web site. Click on "Highlights." Select one highlight provided and write a brief summary about the topic. Include in your discussion the topic's importance in guiding actions and policies to improve the health of American people.
